विंग कमांडर हरचरण सिंह मंगत (महावीर चक्र)
विंग कमांडर हरचरण सिंह मंगत का जन्म 6 जून, 1932 को पंजाब के लुधियाना में हुआ था। उनके पिता श्री राम सिंह मंगत थे। 16 जनवरी, 1954 को उन्हें भारतीय वायु सेना की फ्लाइंग ब्रांच (पायलट) में कमीशन प्राप्त हुआ। बाद में वे एयर कमोडोर के पद तक पहुंचे।
1971 के भारत-पाक युद्ध में विंग कमांडर मंगत ने पश्चिमी मोर्चे पर एक अग्रिम हवाई अड्डे से लड़ाकू बमवर्षक स्क्वाड्रन की कमान संभाली। जब दुश्मन ने अमृतसर, श्रीनगर, अवंतिपुर और पठानकोट के हवाई अड्डों पर बमबारी शुरू की, तो विंग कमांडर मंगत ने दुश्मन के क्षेत्र में घुसकर कई हमलों का नेतृत्व किया। उन्होंने हवाई अड्डों पर तैनात विमानभेदी तोपों को संभावित हमलों के प्रति सचेत किया, जिससे 3 और 4 दिसंबर की रात दुश्मन के विमानों को रोकने में मदद मिली।
4 दिसंबर की सुबह, भारतीय विमानों ने पाकिस्तान के भीतरी ठिकानों पर छापेमारी की। एक हमले का नेतृत्व विंग कमांडर मंगत ने किया। रास्ते में उनके विमान पर दुश्मन की विमानभेदी तोपों ने हमला किया और तीन बार गोली लगी। फिर भी, वे अपने लक्ष्य की ओर बढ़ते रहे। जब उनकी संरचना का एक विमान क्षतिग्रस्त हो गया, तब वे दुश्मन क्षेत्र में 200 किलोमीटर अंदर थे। तीव्र हमले में उनका विमान बुरी तरह क्षतिग्रस्त हो गया, लेकिन उन्होंने अपनी टीम को सुरक्षित बेस पर वापस लाया। बाद में पता चला कि उनके विमान का नियंत्रण पृष्ठ लगभग नष्ट हो चुका था।
इस असफलता ने उनके हौसले को कम नहीं किया। उन्होंने दुश्मन के कई ठिकानों पर हमले किए, जिसमें मार्शलिंग यार्ड, माल गाड़ियां, तोपें और टैंक शामिल थे। साथ ही, उन्होंने फोटो टोही उड़ानों से महत्वपूर्ण जानकारी जुटाई, जिसका उपयोग भारतीय सेना और वायु सेना ने अपनी योजनाओं के लिए किया। उनके अद्भुत साहस और उड़ान कौशल के लिए उन्हें महावीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

Wing Commander Harcharan Singh Mangat (Maha Vir Chakra)
Wing Commander Harcharan Singh Mangat was born on June 6, 1932, in Ludhiana, Punjab, to Shri Ram Singh Mangat. He was commissioned into the Flying Branch (Pilot) of the Indian Air Force on January 16, 1954, and later rose to the rank of Air Commodore.
During the 1971 Indo-Pak War, Wing Commander Mangat commanded a fighter-bomber squadron from a forward airfield on the Western Front. When the enemy launched attacks with bombings on airfields at Amritsar, Srinagar, Awantipur, and Pathankot, he led several retaliatory strikes deep into enemy territory. He also alerted anti-aircraft guns at the airfields about potential air raids, a warning that proved crucial in thwarting enemy aircraft on the nights of December 3 and 4.
In the early hours of December 4, Indian aircraft, in pairs, raided deep Pakistani targets. Wing Commander Mangat led one such mission. En route, their formation of four aircraft came under heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire. His own plane was hit three times, yet he pressed on toward the target until one of the aircraft in his formation was damaged. At that point, they were 200 kilometers inside enemy territory. With his plane severely damaged by intense fire, he skillfully ordered a retreat and safely brought his formation back to base. Upon landing, it was discovered that his aircraft was extensively damaged, with most of its control surfaces completely destroyed.
This setback did not deter him. He went on to lead numerous strikes on enemy targets, including marshalling yards, goods trains, gun positions, and tank concentrations. He also conducted several photo-reconnaissance missions deep inside enemy territory, gathering intelligence that aided the Indian Army and Air Force in their operational planning. For his exceptional flying skills and bravery, Wing Commander Mangat was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.
