On this day, March 17, we commemorate Shaurya Diwas—a day to honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of our brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. Today, let us remember and salute Sepoy Hari Singh, a recipient of the prestigious Mahavir Chakra for his unparalleled bravery during the India-Pakistan War of 1947-48.

Sepoy Hari Singh, serving with the Punjab Regiment, 1 Patiala (RS Infantry), was part of a historic battle at Jhangar in Jammu & Kashmir. On March 17, 1948, during the assault on Pir Thil Nakka, Hari Singh was a rifleman in the leading company. As the attack unfolded, his section found itself under intense enemy fire, forcing them to take cover on the ground. Amidst the chaos, Hari Singh spotted an enemy bunker. Without hesitation, he hurled a grenade at it, charged forward, and using his Sten gun, eliminated both enemy defenders inside.

But the danger was far from over. As he pressed on, another enemy bunker opened fire on him with deadly accuracy. Undeterred, even as a bullet struck his knee, Hari Singh displayed extraordinary grit. He lobbed a second grenade at the nearest enemy position, killing one soldier and forcing another to flee. Moments later, as the rest of his company caught up, an enemy section led by an officer emerged from a hidden post. Despite being 20 yards ahead of his comrades, Hari Singh fearlessly engaged the enemy, taking down their officer in a fierce confrontation.

Through his individual actions, Sepoy Hari Singh eliminated four enemy soldiers, including an officer, and destroyed two fortified enemy positions. In the face of relentless and precise enemy fire, he showed no regard for his own safety, risking his life at every moment. For his exceptional courage and valor, Sepoy Hari Singh was rightfully awarded the Mahavir Chakra, a testament to his indomitable spirit and dedication to the nation.
